How to Support Someone in Recovery

on February 21, 2020 | admin

Suffering from a drug or alcohol addiction is undoubtedly one of the toughest times in a person’s life, and the lives of those who love them. Making the bold decision to get sober is difficult, and requires a lot of effort not just on the part of the addict, but also their surrounding support system. Boca House for Men is a sober living community for men in recovery. Located in sunny South Florida, our home provides the perfect atmosphere for those looking to turn their lives around. With a positive support system of like minded peers, Boca House provides the perfect spot for a smooth transition back into society.

Whether you’re living in a sober living community for men, or you’re a friend of a person in recovery, it’s important to understand there are things you can do to ensure you are a strong support system for those around you.

Educate yourself on the addiction. It can be especially hard to relate to your friend in recovery if you know nothing about it what they have suffered from. Learn about the signs of use, what it does to the user, and how withdrawals can make them uncomfortable. Having a basic understanding of what the drug is doing to the body can give you a solid foundation for helping a friend in need.

Listen. Make sure your friend or family member knows you are there for them and willing to listen. Make it clear that you are available if they need help, since oftentimes just talking through an issue can help people to cope with stress, frustration, and anxiety.

Don’t make excuses. Make sure you are not making excuse for your friend, enabling or covering up their addiction, or allowing them to involve you in their bad habits. Instead, encourage change by inspiring your friend to set goals and change their lifestyle. At Boca House, we adhere to healthy sober lifestyles for everyone in our community.

Check in daily. Check in with your friend and make sure that they are keeping up with their daily goals. Remind them that recovery doesn’t happen overnight, and that celebrating small achievements is important for motivation during each day.

At our sober living community for men, life in recovery is made easy. We work to eliminate the potential triggers that could spark relapse. Contact us today to learn more.
